Internal Dialogues
A dialogue for one.
Qarar / Jawab is a momentary step away from the large-scale works Layale Chaker is known for: a bare, solo reflection that goes back to the first spark of an idea, and to art in its most distilled form.
Its inner dialogue mirrors the call and response at the heart of the Arabic maqām tradition, while opening onto improvisation and an exploration of melody, microtonality and rhythm.
Qarar / Jawab will be performed again and recorded live at Oscar Niemeyer’s Rachid Karami International Fair in Tripoli, Lebanon, for release as a live album.
In maqām, the tonic: the ground a melody leaves and keeps returning to.
Its answer: the same note, an octave higher. A voice replying to itself.
