Trobairitz
Compass

Al-Idrisi's world map of the Mediterranean, drawn with south at the top: blue seas, cream lands, rivers and mountains in red and green
Muhammad al-Idrisi, Tabula Rogeriana, 1154. The Mediterranean, south at the top.

The project imagines the Mediterranean as a space of porous listening, where forgotten songs return and ancient texts find new tongues.

The trobairitz were the women troubadours of medieval Occitania, poet-composers whose voices survive only in fragments. Trobairitz Compass brings together composer and violinist Layale Chaker and the UK-based Idrîsî Ensemble around this figure.

Early and contemporary music meet in a new commission that maps Mediterranean traditions through a decolonial and feminist lens. The project unfolds as concerts, a tour and an educational programme across France, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
